NAGANO (Kyodo) A briefcase containing ¥100 million worth of jewelry was stolen from a hotel room in the city of Nagano on Friday night, police officials said.
The theft was reported by a man employed by a jewelry company based in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, who was staying at Nagano Palace Hotel. He alerted the police at around 8:40 p.m., they said.
According to the investigation, the employee went outside the hotel for dinner at around 8 p.m. Shortly, a man claiming to be one of his coworkers called the front desk, asking the hotel to hand over the key to his room to a "customer" who will be visiting.
After the phone call, a man appeared at the hotel and received the key to the room from a hotel employee, they said.
When the real jewelry company employee returned to his room, the briefcase, which contained about 600 pieces of jewelry and other items, was missing, they said.
