Gem Courses in Europe

Germany: Study Gemology, Diamond Grading in Idar Oberstein (DGemG):

Idar-Oberstein are two idyllic towns in the South-West of Germany, close to famous cities such as Heidelberg.

Leveraging on centuries of gem history and accumulated knowledge and combining it with up to date research, their gemological organsation the Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft  (DGemG) offers one of the best course-programs in the world. The city's century old involvement in the gem trade created one of the best collections of gems available for study we have ever seen.

We have visited Idar-Oberstein several times and have always been impressed by the hospitality and professionalism of the whole community of gem dealers, artists and not in the least the DGemG. Go here for some excellent coursework on Pearls, Gemmology, and Diamond-grading.

Switzerland: Study Gemology, Pearls and Diamond Grading in Basel (SSEF, CIBJO member):
Do you want to learn about gemstones and diamonds, and combine it with a stay in Europe? Our friends at the Swiss Gemmological Institute offer an extensive range of courses at their laboratory in Basel, Switzerland this summer. They are one of the most renowned gemmological organizations in the world and as Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki wrote to us:

"SSEF is the  only gem lab world wide, providing courses on origin determination of rubies, sapphires and emeralds (SSEF Advanced Training Courses)".

Being in the center of ultra-luxury, the SSEF's help is often requested at the Exclusive Basel Jewelry Show as well as by the famous jewelers in Geneva and elsewhere in Switzerland. They pair this unique experience with extensive in-house research.
View their program here. (We will upload their program ourselves shortly. For now you will need to follow the link, click on "education" and then "Gemmological Course Program 2008" (PDF !!)).

Netherlands: Practical Gemology and Gemology Update Course in Leiden (NEL, CIBJO member))

In the historical city of Leiden (which University hosted scientists such as Einstein, Lorentz, Ehrenfest) the Natural History Museum also hosts the Netherlands Gem Laboratory. Besides their obvious role as a gem, pearl and diamond testing laboratory they provide 2 courses as well:

A 1-day Gemology Update Course with an emphasis on the big four gems and discussing the advanced treatments that can only be resolved by laboratories. Their 4-day course consists of 1 day theory and 3 days practical lab work which includes evaluating synthetic stones, treated stones and imitations. Both courses can be given in Dutch and English.
