Answers to General questions:

Does Farlang.com manage my account ? Do I manage all information myself ? (Back to top)

Your are responsible for your own profile, uploading your own images, adding all necessary details for each image etc.  Your membership fee covers your exposure in the most unique and exclusive jewelry/gem community on the internet (branding) and for the traffic that we achieve for the website (doubling every year).

Can I pay to get more visibility ? If not, then how ? (Back to top)

We do not run advertisements and you cannot pay to have a "priority listing" in our on-site search, or be named at the top of our jewelry page for example. Similarly there is no paid way to be selected by our editorial team for the "editor's pick" or to be chosen by our audience as the "most popular" or "most visited".

  1. However you can influence that process by offering the best possible photo material and provide the maximum amount of information with each photo. That helps our algorithms to pick up that information and it helps users or our team of editors to appreciate your work more. That appreciation is usually reflected by being selected. Selected means "more exposure".

Example: adding images will show those images on different pages under "most recently added". Adding a color such as "yellow" will show that image on a page like "spring colors".

  2. Another way to be more visibile is by being more active. This can be done in many ways: just now we have connected several artists who will connect free-form gem art with CAD designs. Others do interviews with other artists. And so forth.

  3. Or join one of our expert teams! It helps build extra exposure for yourself, you'll be working with other amazing people and we can help you establish as an "expert in the field" which is a great context for you to present your work in. Our about page will soon show the type of teams we have organized and who's active in them. In case you are interested, feel free to contact us.

  4. Alternatively you can join our community in one of the social media: Flickr, Facebook, Linkedin, Stumbleupon, Scribd, or Twitter.

As you can see, there are many ways to establish yourself as an expert and create more exposure for yourself.

Why does Farlang require so much information?  (Back to top)

It's all about trust. The more trust the affluent consumer has in our community, the easier it is for them to buy from you, directly or through the galleries you work with. In our opinion trust is created by full disclose, transparency and education.

The more they know about you, photos, videos, how your work was made, why it justifies the price you charge, how much training was involved before you reached this level of skill and so on, the more comfortable they will feel.

Where do I show my images? What are photo quality requirements?

All images should be jpg's. Images should preferably not be larger than 500 KB based on typical internet connections. Furthermore images should not contain nudity or be shocking in other ways.

A) Slideshow/Showcase of your most impressive photographs/designs as shown in the left top corner of a profile. These photos are showcase photos and do not have any legal or transactional purpose. Extensive user-feedback shows that presenting your images in this way will create the feeling of "luxury" and "exclusivity".

The images need to have a full 100 % black background (HEX code: #00000), so that your products will actually float on the black profile page.

No other colors than black (HEX code #000000) for the backgrounds are allowed.

AS A COURTESY, INCLUDED IN YOUR MEMBERSHIP FEE, we offer to help you started should you not have such images available:

We offer to photoshop:
3 images black background with a mirror effect

Each image takes 30 minutes to process, hence the limited number we include in the membership fee.

For any additional images you want to have changed to a black background we charge the following rates to cover the costs:

$ 5 for black background only + transparent
$ 6 for black background + white background + transparent

You will find these rates very low as typical commercial rates for 1 hour photoshop work is quickly $20 - $30.

Images that you want to have processed can be uploaded in our dropbox.
http://dropbox.yousendit.com/PatrickSlavenburg122116108

There is no limitation to size or type of image. We will process them and email them back to you. Please ZIP all files together, into ONE zip file, before you upload.

B) Your product images as seen in "open portfolio" on your profile page, and on any page describing your product . These are images of products presently for sale, or already sold and show your full portfolio of work.

Their backgrounds should generally be very subdued, preferably with black, white, or grey backgrounds. Any other background color will be subject to approval (and most definitely no bright background colors like red, orange, yellow, purple, or funky background textures or setups). In fact any photo, where the background itself is visible (texture or the background color seen through the stone/piece of jewelry) will not be approved. It destroys the "luxury feel".

Since our online loupe largely magnifies parts of each image, your photos need to have a length of at least 2000 pixels on the longest side. The maximum size is 15 MB which is generally never reached, even for very high resolution jpg's or gif's.

C) Photos added to the profile itself such as "artist at the bench", or "my studio/gallery" or "Giving a lecture" and so on.

D) Events: photos can be added to each event, pertaining to that event.

E) Portrait as shown on your profile page.

F) Logo as shown on the profile page.

Why does Farlang have so many photo-requirements? (Back to top)

We want you to look as professional , as "exclusive" and as "unique" as possible in a manner that is consistent with expectations of our target audience. The photos of your portfolio have to "Wow" the audience.  Our tests and those of others show a particular standard emerging to which photos on the internet should adhere in order to create that right association with luxury, high quality and uniqueness.

Second, the quality of your images impacts the perception of Farlang.com as a whole and thus that of the other members of the community.

Third, many sellers of low-end goods, on cheap websites like www.ebay.com or www.etsy.com are fully aware of those luxury standards, and increasinly emulate them in their photos. If you don't do the same, your material looks cheaper than the $ 25 or $ 50 piece that is for sale on these websites. Hardly the impression you want to make.

Does Farlang have a special offer for professional photography? (Back to top)

We have made an agreement with Scovil Photography for standard luxury-style photos, necessary for presentation on websites.

The studio offers one of the following images: black or white backgrounds, with or without a mirror effect.

This agreement is for Farlang members only.  The cost is $25/photo and it is provided in digital format.  Material must be shipped or personally delivered to the studio or can be brought to their place of business in Tucson during the annual gem show.
