Back to Gemstones Back to Sherris Cottier Shank
Tanzania.... Inspiration for a new gem-art line: Whilst on her trip to Tanzania, Sherris became inspired by its people, nature and wildlife. No wonder her newest collection of gem-sculpture which is her first new line in 2 years completely consists of Tanzania mined gemstones. Her work reflects her impressions of such an amazing country.
Launch in Switzerland: She decided to choose Switzerland to launch her new line of art in the gallery of famous jeweler Michael Stahli. For her and another artist Lisa Elser he created a special show at his gallery.
Mini-stone sculpture: Gem art can easily be compared with traditional stone sculpture with the exception that it's done in gemstones. Given the prices of most high quality gemstones and given the lack of available large stone most carving is done in fairly small sizes up to a few carats.
Large gemstones: Recently Sherris was able to obtain larger rough which allows her to work on larger 10-75 ct stones. That is huge in the gem world and her work therefore keeps the middle in between larger "objects d'art" and smaller specialty cut or carved stones used in rings. For her future work she will continue to focus on larger gem stones combining the rarity of their occurence with the rarity of her art.
Pendants, art objects or both? Given the size of the stones and the amazing sculptural qualities of her work, we feel her carved and sculpted gems are great candidates for pendants. Many goldsmiths on and off Farlang will gladly work with you and her on such a project
About Sherris Cottier Shank: Sherris won over a dozen awards in her career, has been highlighted in numerous journals and is one of the few artists that bridges the gem world with the traditional (large sized) sculptural world. Go to her profile for a full BIO and more gem art in her portfolio.
Visit her in Bern: Michael Stahli: Bern, June 11-13
