Gemmology, Diamond-Grading and Pearl Courses in Switserland

Do you want to learn about gemstones and diamonds, and combine it with a stay in Europe? Our friends at the Swiss Gemmological Institute offer an extensive range of courses at their laboratory in Basel this summer. They are one of the most renowned gemmological organizations in the world and as Dr. Michael S. Krzemnicki wrote to us:

"SSEF is the only gem lab world wide, providing courses on origin determination of rubies, sapphires and emeralds (SSEF Advanced Training Courses)".

Being in the center of ultra-luxury, the SSEF's help is often requested at the Exclusive Basel Jewelry Show as well as by the famous jewelers in Geneva and elsewhere in Switserland. They pair this unique experience with extensive in-house research.

View their program here. (We will upload their program ourselves shortly. For now you will need to follow the link, click on "education" and then "Gemmological Course Program 2008" (PDF !!)).

Breaking News !! $ 1.8 M Diamond Necklace stolen

Today a $ 1.8 M Diamond Necklace was stolen at Europe's largest Art Fair in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Shortly after the pre-opening -- which was for invitees only -- 2 women from Costa Rica and 1 man from Mexico were apprehended by the police as suspects in its theft.

During the day the two women had approached the booth of the jeweler but suddenly broke of the conversation and left. The lady, who became suspicious, immediately noted the disappearance of the precious jewel and followed the two women across the show. However, the third person, the man hindered her in doing so. In the end the threesome was apprehended by security when they tried to leave the show and were handed over to the police.

The necklace has not been found so far and the police therefore suspects more people being involved in this hideous crime !
As a standard form of security all purses and bags are checked upon leaving the show. However a necklace can easily be smuggled out of the fair by being worn.

We will keep you updated ! View a larger picture here

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Bactrian Gold from Afghanistan Exhibit

View a new exhibit of Ancient Gold Jewelry from the Bactrian Empire in Afghanistan. While risking their own lives, the director of the National Museum in Kabul and his family, kept the whereabouts of this gold treasure a secret for 15 years.

In 2001 the Taliban came close to finding the treasure when they found the actual safe it was hidden in, however they had no idea it contained the famous gold treasure. After trying to blow up the vault with dynamite in vain, they abandoned the safe and the treasure surfaced in 2004 again.

Find information on the "Hidden Afghanistan " exhbit which can be visited in the center of Amsterdam in the "Nieuwe Kerk" (new church) until April 20 2008. Also DO visit the National Afghanistan Museum in Kabul.

In a few weeks, we will have a special online exhibit ready on this ancient jewelry find.

Study Gems, Pearls and Diamonds in Idar-Oberstein

Leveraging on centuries of gem history and accumulated knowledge and combining it with up to date research, their gemological organsation the Deutsche Gemmologische Gesellschaft (DGemG) offers one of the best course-programs in the world.

Moreover the city's century old involvement in the gem trade created one of the best collections of gems available for study we have ever seen.

We have visited Idar-Oberstein several times and have always been impressed by the hospitality and professionalism of the whole community of gem dealers, artists and not in the least the DGemG. Go here for some excellent coursework on Pearls, Gemmology, and Diamond-grading.
