A SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY
The literature dealing with Southern Africa, both general and technical, is now very large and it will be obvious, therefore, that selection must involve a certain element of arbitrary choice on the part of the compiler: the principles adopted here have been to give some guidance to the reader on 'background' material, political, historical and economic: to refer to the more significant bibliographical and autobiographical works, with special reference to mining, and to stress the literature dealing with mining and mining history. Much attention has been given in recent years to the period of discovery of both diamonds and gold, and some aspects of this subject are still controversial. So far as the autobiographical and biographical literature is concerned, the inclusion of a book does not mean that the authenticity of its contents is necessarily to be accepted without question. It may be added that many of the works included contain important bibliographical material.
