Williams
from California who had had world-wide mining experience. He was like
Rhodes—a strapping big man physically, and together they made an
unbeatable pair-Rhodes with, his financial wizardry and political
craftiness, Williams with his keen mastery of mining technique and
efficiency in operation.
Rhodes
died in 1902, Williams in 1906. Under their leadership, the DeBeer
Company had grown to be a giant in the world of diamonds, and since
their time their successors have carried it to even greater heights.
The financial reins have been held by Rhodes' London backers, foremost
among whom was the great House of Rothschild. Williams' work as a
general manager was carried on for many years by his son, Mr. Alpheus
F. Williams, who recently retired, bearing the reputation of one of
the world's leading authorities on diamond geology and mining.
