But later, as systematic development gave sub­stantial assurance of the endurance of the mines, the advance in the architectural beauty of the residences and public buildings in Kimberley has been marked. Now many of the residences of the more wealthy townspeople are not only substantial, but dis­tinctly ornate in character, with widespreading verandas rising in the midst of green lawns and lovely gardens. Some of the public buildings already erected or in process of erection need not fear comparison with any like structures in any city of its size in the world.
