The
Kimberley Public Library is a well-built building, containing three
large rooms, of which one is free to the public, and the others
reserved for subscribers. Smaller rooms are provided for the librarian
and committee. It is especially notable for its remarkable store of
reference works, which is esteemed to be the best in South Africa. It
contains in all twenty-two thousand books, many of which would be
irreplaceable if destroyed. The building up of this library is justly
credited to the fostering care of Mr. Justice Lawrence, the Judge
President.
Midway
between Kimberley and Beaconsfield stands the Kimberley Sanatorium, a
superb structure erected by the liberal contributions of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited at a cost, with its furnishings, of £26,000.
Its fine enclosing grounds, the gift of the London and South African
Exploration Company, were artistically laid out under the direction of
Mr. Fenner of the De Beers Forestry Department. The larger part of the
building is designed for the accommodation of guests, and the smaller
block contains the billiard room, smoking room, kitchen, servants' and
