In 1889 the Rev. James Hughes, of Port Elizabeth, at the invitation of the Baptist Union of South Africa, came to the Diamond Fields and held the first denominational meetings in the Good Templars Hall in Kimberley. Through his efforts a
church was formed, and in 1892 the foundation stone of the present commodious Baptist Church in Dutoitspan Road was laid.
