Experience has shown that Kim-berley has special attractions as a health resort in spite of the occasional intense heat of its summer days and the blasts of its high winds laden with dust. It has the pure atmosphere of the high karroo plateau, and even in the hottest days the bright starlight even­ings are usually cool and refreshing, inviting the people to live for the greater part of the year in the open air on verandas and balconies. During the winter months the nights are often extremely cold, and well protected dwelling rooms are essential for com­fort and health ; but during the day the atmosphere is commonly clear, and so still that the severity of the cold is not felt, and all kinds of active outdoor exercise are agreeable in the bright sun­light of the unclouded skies.
