essential to the successful advance of later exploration. The Dutch
settlement at the Cape was expanding. Year after year pioneer settlers
pushed out farther from the Castle, moving
up
the river valleys, and clinging at first to the base of hill ranges
where the essential supply of water was most surely attainable. After
the taking up of the choice locations, later comers passed on over the
open veld, and it was seen that there were large tracts of land,
un-suited to agriculture, which would serve well as ranges for cattle
and sheep.
