Firuzah (Turquoise)
Temperament: Cold and dry in the second degree (Bahr al-Jawahir).
Therapeutic Action: Tonic for the vital organs, lithontriptic, and of
use in night blindness (Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
Usage: In the tonic murawweh id-arwali, collyria, and in other
polypharmaceuticals (Dihli kay Sahih Miirakkabat; ilaj al-Amrad:
Qarabadin-e-Dhakai).
Aqiq (Agate)
Temperament: Cold and dry in the second degree (the burnt stone
is even more effective).
Therapeutic Action: Cardiac tonic; dispels agitation; styptic
together with other medicines (Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
L'sage: Used as a dentifrice, as a tonic for delaying ejaculation and
as collyrium (Dihli kay Sahih Miirakkabat; Ilaj al-Amrad; Qarabadin-eDhakai).
Dara' (Arabian Shell, Cats' Eye)
Temperament: Hot and dry in the third degree.
Therapeutic Action: Detersive; anti-hallucinatory; useful in
jaundice, facial paralysis, styptic, of use in cataract; dentifrice. Eases
parturition; cures epileptic fits in children (Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
Bussud (Coral)
Temperament: Cold in the first and dry in the second degree.
Therapeutic Action: Desiccative; tonic for the liver and stomach;
of use in hallucination and epilepsy (Al-Hawi; Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
L'sage: It is used as a dentifrice and in a powder for phthisis (Ilaj
al-Amrad; Makhzan al-Adawiyyah; Qarbadin-e-Dhakai).
Marjan (Coral Tree)
Temperament: Cold and dry, both in the second degree.
'Therapeutic Action: Astringent; desiccative; theriac; exhilarant;
anti-hallucinatory; useful in stomach ailments and epilepsy in children
(Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
L'sage: In calces, theriacs, etc. (ilaj al-Amrad) and in fermented
medicines (Qarabadin-e-Dhakai).
Lajward (Lapis Lazuli)
Temperament: Hot in the first degree and dry in the second.
'Therapeutic Action: Exhilarant; cardiac tonic; resolvent for atrabile
(Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
Usage: Used in polypharmaceuticals having exhilarating properties
