Kahruba (Kali ruba, Amber)
Temperament: Temperate in heat and coldness and dry in the
second degree.
Therapeutic Action: Exhilarant, cardiac tonic; styptic; astringent;
anti-emetic; of use in diseases of the eye; anodyne; useful in jaundice
and blenorrhoea; stomachic; tonic for the kidneys and gall bladder;
anti-haemorrhagic and fertility agent Makhzan al-Adawiyyah).
I'sage: As a dentifrice, as a polypharmaceutical in phthisis, piles
(llaj al-Amrad), as a powder in spermatorrhoea (Ilaj al-Amrad) and as
pills (Qarabadin-e-Dhakai).
Maghnatis (Magnet)
Temperament: Cold and dry according to Ibn Sina.
Therapeutic Action: Facilitates parturition: lithontriptic; useful in
paralysis, facial paralysis and rheumatism; stomachic; used in diseases
due to atrabile; in calx as ocular tonic.
i'sage: In medicines facilitating child-birth and perfumes (for
leucorrhoea) (Qarabadin-e-Kabir) and in pounded form as collyrium
(llaj al-Amrad).
Shadanaj (Haematite)
Temperament: Hot (to the extreme extent) in the first degree and
dry in the second (when washed); when unwashed, cold in the first
degree (to the maximum extent) and dry in the second (to the maximum extent).
Therapeutic Action: Cathartic; warming agent; useful in paralysis,
facial paralysis, and palsy; desiccative and attenuant (Makhzan alAdawiyyah).
i'sage: In powders collyria, pills and ointments (Dihli kay sahih
Murakkabat; llaj al-Amrad; and Qarabadin-e-Kabir).
Zujaj (Crystal)
Temperament: Hot in the first degree and dry in the second.
'Therapeutic Action: Detersive, attenuant and aperient: useful in
gall bladder and kidney stones, inflammation of the spleen; tooth
powder; promotes conception (Al-'Tadhkirah).
Usage: In collyria (Makhzan al-Adawiyyah; Qarabadiu-e-Qadri).
calces (llaj al-Amrad; Rumuz al-Attiba), for promoting conception and
as lithontriptic (Miftah al-Khazain) and in powders.
Zibaq (Mercury)
Temperament: Hot and dry in the second degree.
Therapeutic Action: Astringent and cicatrizing agent.
