to be the northerly continuation of the Russell's synclinal reef, seen near the No. 1 shaft in the 126 ft. 10 in. level. The western leg of this reef has been driven on southerly for 55 feet, and northerly for 153 feet. On the eastern leg it was surveyed south for 40 feet, to where the face had fallen in.
706 ft. 11 in. Level.—At 100 feet to the south, and 20 feet to the east of the shaft, a trough-reef has been struck, and worked south-westerly on the western leg for 180 feet. The quartz here is only 12 inches thick. To the north this reef is seen in the bottom level at 776 'ft. 3 in., where it is 65 feet to the north of the shaft, and pitches north at 32 degrees. This I believe to be the reef that was so profitably worked near the No. 1. shaft at the 245 ft. 9 in. level.
The Russell's anticline can be seen at 180 feet to the east of the No. 2 shaft in the 776 ft. 3 in. level. That is the only sign of centre-country in all the eastern cross-cut of 265 feet from the No. 2 shaft.
The South Russell's Mine.
This mine adjoins the southern boundary of the Russell's Reef Amalgamated mine. The company has a length of about 430 feet along the stoped all the length to the boundary, in payable ore. Towards the south-Russell's Company begins. The shaft of the South Russell's Company is about 30 feet to the south of its northern boundary.
103 ft. 8 in. Level.—In this, the first, level, the synclinal reef was worked downward for 30 feet near the shaft, where the quartz was 10 feet thick in the trough, and all payable. North of the northern -boundary of the lease the drive was connected with the 126 ft. 10 in. level of the Russell's Reef Amalgamated mine. The eastern leg was the better, and was worked for about 20 feet upwards; the western leg was worked for about 12 feet upwards. The reef was worked for 264 feet to the south of the shaft on payable ore.
203 jt. 6 in. Level.—At 130 feet to the east of the shaft is an anticlinal reef, pitching to the south, which, has been worked to the southern boundary. The cap of the reef is 40 feet high at the cross-cut. On the western leg, at 130 feet from the cross-cut, the reef has not been stoped, but beyond that has been worked to the boundary, The eastern leg w-as stoped all the length to the boundary, in payable ore. Towards the southern end a big slide cut across the centre-country, and to the south of this, right up to the boundary, the stone was richer. Centre-country has been lost close to this boundary. The No. 1 South Russell's Company drove a level on a small line of reef, underlying to the east, right up to its northern boundary, and came on the anticlinal workings in the South Russell's ground, but could not trace centre country into its own ground. A crosscut has been driven to the east for 148 feet at the 186 ft. 2 in. level in the No. 1 South Russell's mine, but has not yet found centre country. This South Russell's saddle-reef was worked northward to its boundary, and connected with the Russell's Reef Amalgamated workings at the 245 ft. 9 in. level of that mine, where the trough-reef was very rich near the shaft. T suspect it forms the eastern leg of the -synclinal reef in the Russell's Reef Amalgamated mine, worked from the 245 ft. 6 in. level. In its southward extension it has turned to the east, and become the western leg of the anticlinal (saddle) reef in the South Russell's ground, at 430 feet to the south.
278 ft. 11 in. level.—A trough reef occurs near the shaft, 297 feet from the surface. Tt can be seen in the level, about 60 feet to the south of the shaft, and has been worked southward to the boundary. Its strike is N. 20 cleg. 30 min. W.. and it pitches to the north at 16 deg. 30 rain. Near the shaft the ore is at a depth of 20 feet, and is payable.
