No. 1 Adit.—This tunnel starts from Back Creek, west of O'Connor's United shaft, and runs easterly for 636 feet. At 474 feet along it a small lode has been intersected. This has been driven on for a short distance to the north and south, but the ground has now, fallen and blocked it. This is the adit shown in section on Lidgey's Plan.
No. 2 Adit --This adit has been driven for 297 feet from Swanky Gutly to the west of the Panama workings, towards the Belltopper lode.
No. 3 Adit.—The Missing Link, or No. 3 adit, is about 400 feet to the east of the Panama adit. It has been driven on a bearing of X. 59 degrees E., for 662 feet, under Belltopper Hill. At 318 feet from its mouth, it intersects the Missing Link Lode, along which it has been driven northerly for 623 feet. For part of this length it has been stoped to the surface (166 feet above), where the lode, underlying to the east, has been worked from old shafts for 500 feet on a bearing of N. 29 degrees W. Near the mouth of the adit, there is a lode, 15 inches thick, running N\ 2i| degrees W., which is sometimes called the Antimony Lode. It has teen driven on for about 20 feet. In this adit there were seen no signs of folding of the strata. For 200 or 300 feet along the eastern end of the adit the walls are thicklv covered with crystals of sulphate of magnesia, which is apparently the reason for the local name of the "Salts Tunnel."
The Antimony Adit.—The next adit on the banks of Back Creek and about 400 feet to the south of the Missing Link Adit, is the Antimony Adit. This has been driven on a bearing of E. 19 deg. 48 min. S. for about 100 feet to the Antimony Lode. This lode has been worked in a winze near the face of the adit, and bv a drive about 30 feet long, on a bearing of S. 26 degrees E. There has evidently been more work than this done here, but the workings are not accessible, and I could get no reliable information about them from residents of the district.
The Belltopper Adit.—This adit is a mile or more from the Antimony Adit down Back Creek, and lies to the east of Belltopper Hill. From the western bank of Back Creek, the adit has been driven westward for 1,043 feet. At 568 feet along it there is a synclinal fold, with quartz showing. This has been worked a little distance both north and south. At 1,021 feet along it there is a drive on a 5 foot lode of quartz. This lode bears S. 13 degrees E. and underlies at 58 degrees to the E. It looks like the eastern leg of a saddle reef. It has been driven on for at least 12 feet to the north and 83 feet to the south, but as the ground has fallen in at both places nothing further could be ascertained.
LAURTSTON.
North Wyndham Adit.—About 1 mile to the north of Lauriston is the North Wyndham Adit. It has been driven to the east for 530 feet. At 385 feet along it a small lode 6 inches thick has been driven on to the north for 100 'feet. It is underlying at 46 degrees to the west, and pitching at 19 degrees to the north.
In the Lauriston district the quartz reefs worked are generally bedded with the strata.
At Drummond North, in the O'Connor's United, and the Panama, the reefs cut across the strata.
