These jewels were designed for the Countess of Granville,
wife of the English ambassador to Russia, to be worn at the
coronation of the late emperor, and attracted the admiration,
says Mr. King, of the imperial, princely, and noble families of
the empire, accustomed though they were to the lavish display
of the richest and most splendid gems the world affords.
