Apophyllite. — This substance is sometimes classed with
gem-minerals, but its deficiency in hardness, ranking only
from 4 to 5, renders its use for jewelry very doubtful. The
name is derived from its tendency to exfoliate under the
blow-pipe. It is generally transparent, white or gray, occasionally tinged with green, yellow, or red, and has a pearly
lustre resembling the eye of a fish, whence it is sometimes
called "fish-eye stone." It occurs in India, the Harz Mountains, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, the United States, and
other localities.
