inserted
into the upper part; the result being that, when an attempt is made to
extricate an arrow from the body of man or beast, this secondary
section remains in the wound and only the upper end comes out.
Instances are quite rare when the presence of this foreign body, which
can seldom be removed from the wound, does not cause death. The tips of
the arrows are equipped with bits of sharp glass that cut. I secured
five or six of these arrows which were picked up on the battleground.
They had been aimed toward us but not one had touched us.
Toward
the end of the month, the same situation developed that had occurred
beyond San Francisco, that is, the country had either been stripped of
all game, or the game had gone up or rather gone down toward the Tulare
Valley; in other words, to a region too remote from San Francisco or
even from the pueblo at San Jose for meat to arrive fresh. And so our
means of a livelihood had failed us again and we were obliged to return
to San Francisco. However, I had nearly attained my cherished goal.
