Other nations had coveted Mexico's one-time province. As early as 1839, Forbes, the British onsul down the coast at Tepic, had been moving heaven and earth to pack his countrymen into California. The view of the Mission of San Francisco above appeared in a book he wrote to ncourage English immigration.
Just as General Scott was storming the heights of Chapultepec, an enterprising New York ditor passed off the picture below as a genuine view of the town of San Francisco, formerly :nown as "the settlement at Yerba Buena cove."
