The Sleepy Utopia 9
Until April, 1848, there was little excitement in the towns along the coast. But as summer drew on, the rush to the American River almost emptied San Jose—San Francisco—even Monterey.
On June 20, alcalde Colton observed: "My messenger sent to the mines has returned with specimens of the gold; he dismounted in a sea of upturned faces." In a matter of days, the alcalde and the commandant of Monterey were cooking their own food. E very one of those faces was set toward EI Dorado.
"Such a mixed and motley crowd—" said Colton of the miners he saw drifting up and down the slopes of the Sierra—"such a restless, roving, rummaging, ragged multitude!"
For the worthy alcalde had gone off to the mines himself in September.
