Until
April, 1848, there was little excitement in the towns along the coast.
But as summer drew on, the rush to the American River almost emptied
San Jose—San Francisco—even Monterey.
On June 20, alcalde Colton
observed: "My messenger sent to the mines has returned with specimens
of the gold; he dismounted in a sea of upturned faces." In a matter of
days, the alcalde and the commandant of Monterey were cooking their own food. E very one of those faces was set toward EI Dorado.
