The gold rush was more than a flight from responsibility on the part of paunchy failures, would-be great men and recent immigrants. The two young Pennsylvanians above were much more typical of the Forty-Niners as a group. Prior to their departure for the great adventure they had themselves daguerreotyped in their trail outfits.
