Thousands upon thou­sands of young men like these read the advertise­ments at the right, consid­ered their qualifications and signed up.
When these "companies" set out on the long journey, they had as a rule a military organization much like that of the State militia.
Very often, the members were presented each with a Bible at the farewell services held by the churches to sanctify the setting forth. The sermon at the left was one of hundreds preached as the argonauts departed.
But on the overland trail, or at sea, the secular anthem below was the great song of the gold-seekers. Bayard Taylor listened with amazement as his native boatman Juan Crispin roared it out along the Chagres River in the jungles of Panama.
