The road from Kanesville along the northern bank of the Platte crossed many streams, small and large, before reaching that point opposite Grand Island where the emigrants could see across the river the wagon trains coming up to the "coasts of the Platte" from Westport and St. Joe. The view above shows wagons at the Elk Horn River ferry on the Mormon Trail. Below is shown the ferry across the Loup Fork.
