Water and pasturage were good in the valley of the Sweetwater. Herds of buf­falo and antelope grazed there. Once through the grim cleft of Devil's Gate {right) the river flowed placidly along, and the trail meandered beside it and across it.
From an occasional elevation in the floor of the valley, the emigrants could see the loom of the mountains.
