When J. M. Letts made the sketch left, Hangtown had al­ready become Placerville.
There was still room for improvement, however. To enter the Yankee's House at Placerville, you had to crawl in and dou­ble up like a jackknife.
Many an exhausted gold-seeker, stumbling down into the Sacra­mento Valley without food or out­fit, found generous aid at Sutter's Fort, seen at the left as it ap­peared in 1849.
Rescue parties of Sutter's em­ployees went out eastward on the trail to bring help to emigrants stranded in the passes.
