But the best way from Salt Lake City to California was the Mormon caravan trail which ran east of Utah Lake (above) through the southern Mormon settlements to the valley of the Sevier River. It paralleled and then joined the Old Spanish Trail from Santa Fe to Los Angeles, following the valley of the Virgin River (below) until that river bent southward.
