The faro tables (above) did a thriving business in the mining camps and at Sacramento City All too little of the precious dust found its way to the banker's assay table (below). The cost of food, clothing and the simplest personal services was so high that much of the mined gold passed into the hands of carpenters, boarding-house proprietors and land speculators.
