of the emigrants wrote: "We had to take off our mules and let our
wagons down with ropes. After getting to the bottom, we traveled down a
canyon for some twelve miles or more [above]; crossing a stream that ran through it, some 35 or 40 times in that distance."
At the end of the Guadaloupe Pass, the trail turned northward through San Bernardino Springs
