The valley of Santa Cruz (above) was a welcome sight to emigrants who had bulled their way through the Guadaloupe. But its good grass fed few cattle; its beauty was scarred with the ruins of ranches and villages. The Apaches made this lovely valley their special prey. No one could live there in safety.
About a hundred miles up the valley of Santa Cruz lay Tucson (below), a town of about five hundred souls, where the wagon trains recruited for the long, dry drive to the Gila, and stocked up with melons, fruit and flour.
