Southwest the Course 89
The heat and dry air were shrinking the wooden parts of the wagons. Tires ran off the wheels; bodies began to fall to pieces. Grass could be got for the worn-out animals only by swimming them to the bars and islands in the river's thread. On this part of the route, between the bend of the Gila (above) or Big Horn Mountain (below) and the edge of the desert—sixteen days' travel away—tragedies began to multiply. Many of the emigrants were pushing dumbly along on foot. Mules were dead; food was gone; up ahead was the junction of the Gila and the Colorado—and the desert!
