Sometimes a mirage tantalized the travelers as they plodded slowly through the sand. The apĀ­pearance of tall, minareted cities on the horizon above was only the heat-distorted image of distant mountains.
The interminable trail wound on. The bones of men and animals reminded the emigrants of what they would have preferred to forget (below): But the wall of the cordillera was in sight, and almost miraculously a stream had appeared in the desert which the emigrants called Salvation River or New River.
