The desert, the In­dians, the mountains, thirst, hunger, disillu­sion—none of these had downed the spirits of those hardy souls who came pouring into San Diego (right). Many were on foot, and ready to tell anyone who would listen what fine outfits they had lost— what splendid animals the Yumas had stolen from them at the cross­ing of the Colorado.
Two survivors of the "Knickerbocker Company" bought a wagon at San Diego Mission (below) and filled it with vegetables. They had heard that fresh food was selling high in the gold districts, and the desert had not blunted their sense of business.
