In some localities, there were tawny, half-Indian beauties (right) who were the belles of the fandango before an increasing number of female Americans pre-empted that social eminence.
But with women or without them, the miners celebrated holidays with brandy, champagne and song. A stag "dance" like the one pictured below might go on for days and end only when the revelers "lay about in heaps on the floor, howling, barking and roaring."
