The gold-seekers who took ship from San Diego or Los Angeles at the end of the southwestern trail found San Francisco (above, in
1849) a feverish tent-town, with on every side "buildings of all kinds,
begun or half-finished, and the greater part of them mere canvas sheds
open in front and covered with signs in all languages." Portsmouth
Square (below) boasted the "El Dorado" gamÂbling house and the
"Parker House" hotel, a frame structure whose second floor was occupied
enÂtirely by gamblers.
