When the rate of pay had been arranged to their satisfaction, the boatmen hefted their broad paddles, strolled down to the riverside, and with a few practiced strokes sent the canoe up the Chagres, away from the noise and confusion of the town to the beauty and seclusion of the river. Native canoes are seen at the mouth of the Chagres River in the view above.
