Some of the gold-seekers avoided the native houses and pitched their tents on the river bank, as seen above. They broke out the rice and dried pork which they had bought at the town of Chagres, split a little firewood and cooked supper.
For the first time, many of the Americans became acquainted with the tropical custom of the siesta. In the view below, a lady of New Granada is seen in repose. The hammock was swung purposely low to furnish the dogs and other domestic animals a convenient solid point for scratch­ing their backs.
