More gold-seekers were waiting at Man-zanillo (right); and at Mazatlan (below). To this latter port, most of the voyagers across Mexico had directed their steps, for it was the point nearest Cali­fornia on the Mexican Pacific coast from which passage might be had.
After clearing Mazatlan, the ship ran around Cape San Lucas, the rugged point of Lower Cali­fornia, and then turned northward. The air grew cooler, as the northwest trade winds began to be felt. When the harbor of San Diego was in sight, there was no longer any depression aboard ship. For the bay of San Francisco would soon be reached—the Golden Gate!
