At first he found the route an interesting one. There were new specimens of plant and animal life which were bound to please an Audubon. But the long days of marching went by without any seeming progress. Up one ridge and down another; and the mules began to fail!
On the Fourth of July, 1849, the party encamped at the spot shown above, near the Paso Chapa-daro.
