The term "clipper" did not apply to the rig of a ship or to its size, but to the vessel's ability to run swiftly—to "clip." The Mermaid, for example, was barque-rigged (above) : she was about one-third the size of the Flying Cloud.
The Telegraph (shown below as work was being completed on her hull) was intended for service as a California packet. Her lines were considered fast but dangerous.
