With everything set that could draw, the clipper Syren passes Boston Light, bound for California —another of the 1851 crop of fleet voy­agers to the gold country.
On July 5, 1851, the Union, a steamship, ran aground on the coast of Lower California. Vapors of the previous day's celebration still fogged the brains of the crew, and the result was the catas­trophe shown below—a. sad commentary on excessive patriotism.
