Popular magazines of the day "featured" the new metropolis of California. The 1851 view above shows San Francisco "drawn on the spot from the foot of Telegraph Hill." Three weeks later, the same magazine ran the sketch below which shows "the upper side of Montgomery Street, at the foot of Washington," and tried for a little local color in its caption by adding that the street was "crowded by hombres in every imaginable costume."
