Sonoru boasted in 1851 that it contained more gamblers, drunkards and fast women, and more and larger lumps of gold than any place of equal size west of the Sierra. Gold had been found at Sonora in the summer of 1848 by a party of Mexicans, and the first name given these diggings was "Sonorian Camp."
