NATURAL HISTORY OF GEMS.
especial symbol, depicted by nature upon either a black or a white ground, and inclosed within a golden circle. The idea reminds us of its counterpart, the Hysteropetrœ, appropriated to the other sex, that excited so much wonder in the mediseval geologists, like Agricola, who describes them as "lapides nigricantes et duros qui pudendum muliehre exprimèrent." They were found about Marienburgh and Ehrenbreitstein, and were regarded, Uffenbach tells us, as miraculous memorials of the unsullied virginity of St. Ursula and her eleven thousand maiden companions. The specific remedial virtue of the Jade is attributed by Orpheus to the Crystal, if worn tied about the loins of the person suffering from nephritic complaints.
