DESCRIPTION OF THE WOODCUTS.
369
P. 268. The Fortuna Fortis of Antrum, as she is figure with her twin-sister, Felix, on a denarius of the Rustia Gens : on whose family name the rural ant in the field is the rebus. Prase.
P. 272. Cybele, or, rather, Faustina Mater, thus deified. Red Jasper.
P. 277. The portrait noticed at p. 275. It has very much the character of that of Demetrius Poliorcetes on his medals. The horn is clearly not the wreathed one of Amnion, but rather the wild goat's of Caranus, founder of the Macedonian dynasty : assumed by the present bearer on the same principle as Alexander did that of his parent-god, and Lysimaehus that of Bacchus.
P. 286. Young Faun acting the cup-bearer to his senior, and filling his scyphus with his oenochoe out of a crater proportionate to the thirsty nature of the family. Archaic Greek. Yellow Sard.
P. 299. Achilles about to arm himself; in one hand he holds his sword, with the other he draws forward his chlamys ; the several pieces of the panoply lie around him in readiness on the ground. A very minute engraving. Sardonyx.
P. 302. Sol, lord of the universe, in his four-horse car. Around the field the Gnostic invocation ÁÂÁÁÍÁÈÁ-NAABA, " Thou -art our Father ! " In the exergue, TYSEYI, which Alex. Trallianus informs us is a title of the Sun. Loadstone.
P. 311. The Cœsar Diadumenian (p. 308) as Mars: but wielding, instead of the proper spear, the rudder of Fortune : a flattering augury, disproved by his untimely and miserable fate. Sard.
P. 322. Eecumbent Sphinx : archaic Greek work, retaining much of the Assyrian manner. Scarabeoid : Sar-doine.
