370             DESCRIPTION OF ÔÐÅ WOODCUTS.
Pages 370, 377. Obverse and reverse of a seal-tablet in fine yellow Jasper, bearing the name, in a cartouche, of Amenophis II., whose date is the 15th century before our era. The extremely free and natural drawing of the bull, however, proves of itself that this intaglio cannot belong to that remote period, or indeed to pure Egyptian art of any period, but that it is either a Phoenician or even a Ptolemaic copy of an earlier and ruder original. The peculiar type of horse, observable on certain Phoenician medals also, makes me incline to the former explanation of the parentage of this exceptionally excellent specimen of the Egyptian style. (British Museum.)
