the light it throws upon every branch of archaeology: an assertion which will be found amply established by the ac­companying explanation of their designs. They possess the additional recommendation of being derived from unpublished originals, having been all taken from gems of my own, selected on account of the interest of their subjects, and their indisputable authenticity. They have been drawn and engraved for this work by Mr. E. B. Utting; and a very extensive acquaintance with the numerous splendid volumes on Dactyliography, which commanded the best artistic skill of the last century, enables me confidently to declare that these woodcuts surpass in fidelity, whilst they equal in execu­tion, any reproductions of antique gems hitherto achieved. To the kindness of Professor Tennant I am indebted for the loan of the cuts of the Star of the South, the Koh-i-noor, Mr. Dresden's Diamond, and the Imperial State Crown of England.
