only. And in the year 1800 Clausel, Weller, and Hachette, by adding one part of Diamond to sixty of iron, obtained an ingot of excellent steel.
Hardness is very important as a practical test for ascertaining the species of gems, on account of its easy application. It means that the native crystal of any species will scratch all in the scales below it. Thus the Diamond, standing highest (10), scratches all the rest. 9. Corundum; Sapphire, Ruby. 8. Brazilian Topaz. 7. Rock crystal. 6. Adularia, or Moon­stone. 5. Asparagus-stone. 4. Fluor spar, &c.
For all the details connected with the present trade in Dia­monds, both wholesale and retail, the reader desirous of complete and accurate information can have no better authority than Barbot " ancien joaillier," under " Diamant," in his ' Traite Complet des Pierres Precieuses,' Paris, 1858. But the historical portion is full of inaccuracies here, as in the rest of his treatise.
