Examples of the Eye-Onyx, exactly agreeing with the above descriptions, are often to be seen mounted in antique rings of the Lower Empire, and yet more so in those of mediaeval times.* Having their natural form but rarely interfered with by the in­troduction of an intaglio, it may be concluded that they were reserved intact as amulets preservative of the wearer's sight.
