Heliotrope or A transparent variety of Chalcedony or Quartz, Bloodstone: containing red spots of Jasper, which look like drops of blood. It is used as a gem stone.
Helvite: Occurs commonly in tetrahedral crystals and also in
spherical masses and is analagous to the Garnet group.
Color honey-yellow to yellowish-brown. Occurs in
Saxony associated with Garnet, Quartz, Fluorite and Calcite. In
the United States it is found at Amelia Court House, Virginia.
Hematite: Iron
Sesquioxide. Iron 70%, Oxygen 30%. This is one of the most important
minerals, if not the most important one from the economic standpoint,
since it is the most valuable of all the iron ores. 80% of all the iron
ore mined in the United States is Hematite, most of which is taken from
the Lake Superior region, where it is mined in large open quarries, as
it lies near the surface. In addition to its use as an iron ore, the
earthy varieties are ground and employed in the manufacture of dark red
paint such as is used for freight cars. The name is derived from a
Greek word, meaning blood.
Hematite
occurs in black glistening crystals; in yellow brown or red earthy
masses; in granular and micaceous aggregates and stalac-titic forms. It
is a good conductor of electricity. Hematite is sometimes used as
settings in mourning jewelry.
Handsome
crystals occur on the Isle of Elba; in France; in the lavas of Vesuvius
and at many places in England, Sweden, Switzerland and Norway. The
beautiful rosettes or so-called "Eisenrosen" are from St. Gothard,
Switzerland and are a form of crystallization of Hematite.
Herderite: Fluo-phosphate
of Beryllium and Calcium. Occurs only in crystals, colorless, light
yellow or greenish-white. This mineral is found in the tin mines of
Saxony and occurs in pegmatite veins at Stoneham, Maine. The material
from Maine is used to a small extent as a gem stone.
Herrengrundite: Copper
Sulphate. Sulphur 25%, Cupric Oxide 50%. Occurs in transparent
crystals, thin six-sided tabular crystals. Luster vitreous, color
emerald green and bluish-green. This mineral occurs with Calcite
and Malachite at Herrungrund, Hungary, from which it takes its
name.
Hessite: Silver
Telluride. Tellurium 36%, Silver 64%. Occurs in crystals, massive,
compact or fine grained. Color between lead-gray and steel-gray.
Occurs in rich silver
mines in Siberia, also in Transylvania, Hungary, Chile, and New
